School Readiness: preparing your child for a confident start

Starting school brings a new set of routines, expectations, and social demands. Our School Readiness program helps children build the skills that make that transition smoother.

What does School Readiness cover?

School Readiness is a focused set of goals within a child’s broader treatment plan, aimed at the specific skills classrooms require: following group instructions, sitting for structured activities, transitioning between tasks without distress, and interacting appropriately with peers and adults outside the family.

Why school transitions can be difficult

For many children on the autism spectrum, the classroom environment introduces challenges that don’t come up as often at home — larger groups, less individualized attention, more transitions throughout the day, and less predictable routines. Without preparation, these differences can lead to frustration, withdrawal, or behaviors that make it harder for a child to access learning once they start school.

Skills we target before and during the transition

Following multi-step group instructions
Sitting and attending during structured group activities
Managing transitions between subjects, activities, and settings
Initiating and responding to peers in group settings
Independent self-care tasks expected in a classroom, like using materials and following routines

Working alongside your child’s school

Where possible, our team coordinates directly with school staff, sharing strategies that have worked in therapy and, where relevant, joining school meetings alongside coordinated care conferences. This helps create continuity between what your child practices with us and what’s expected once they’re in the classroom.

Ongoing support once school starts

School Readiness isn’t limited to the weeks before a child starts school. For many families, we continue this focus into the school year, adjusting goals as new challenges come up and staying in communication with teachers about what’s working.

Getting started with School Readiness

If your child is approaching preschool or kindergarten age, mention that timeline during your CMDE or your next coordinated care conference so School Readiness goals can be built into their Individual Treatment Program with enough lead time before the transition.

Common questions about School Readiness

How early should we start working on School Readiness goals? Many families begin a year or more before their child starts school, giving enough time to build routines gradually rather than rushing skills right before the first day.
Does this replace what the school itself will teach? No. School Readiness at Elite Services Center Inc focuses on the underlying skills — attention, transitions, following group instructions — that make it easier for your child to access whatever curriculum their school provides.

Confidence, not just compliance

Our goal for School Readiness isn’t simply a child who can sit quietly and follow directions. We aim for a child who walks into a classroom with genuine confidence — comfortable enough with routines and social expectations to actually participate, ask questions, and build friendships, rather than just getting through the day.
